About Violet
Violet Wang 王子萱 is an Taiwanese multi-disciplinary performer, music director, and educator. Classically trained in cello and piano, she dedicates herself to reaching beyond the traditional and committing to the creation of art in all genres.
Following her studies at National Taiwan Normal University (under the mentorship of Ling-Yi Ouyang) and Circle in the Square Theater School, Violet launched a rich career as a musician, actor, arranger, and music director in New York City.
With a unique talent for arranging and improvising, and performing contemporary genres on both cello and piano, Violet has built a name for herself as one of the most in-demand session musicians in New York’s independent music scene. Violet has recorded, arranged for, and performed extensively with award-winning artist Belle Shea since the start of her career and collaborates frequently with producer Jason Sill of Grand Street Recording Studios. Violet can also be heard playing original arrangements on both cello and piano across the discography of independent artists Laura Mock, Shelby Jean, and more.
A concert cellist, Violet holds a standing position as a soloist with The Chelsea Symphony and performs as part of a duet with violinist Laura Zawarski in their “Couch Classical” series, listed on the Top 25 Things To Do in New York by TimeOut in July 2024.
Violet is currently on faculty as a Pianist and Music Director at Circle in the Square Theatre School, where she recently music directed (piano-conducted) Urinetown and A Little Night Music. She has also held pianist positions at the Jen Waldman Studio, NYU Tisch (New Studio on Broadway), Barnard College, and IAMT (Institute for American Musical Theatre).
Violet is an award-winning actor, voted Best Performer in a Play by the BroadwayWorld Michigan Awards for her role as Countess Almaviva in Figaro at the Hope Repertory Theatre. She often incorporates music into her work and is known as an experienced actor-musician. Violet has a strong command of Shakespearean works, and has performed in both traditional and contemporary Shakespearean performances with Titan Theatre Company (LADY CAPULET, Romeo and Juliet), Clocktower Players (FESTE, Twelfth Night the Musical), Barefoot Shakespeare Company (JULIET, Lady Capulet; MARIA, Love’s Labour’s Lost), and Circle in the Square Theater School (TITANIA, A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
Violet regularly performs and records as a pit musician for theatrical works. She was the original cellist for Infernal: The Musical (first soundtrack recording) and Show Me Eternity (Winner: Best New Score and Best New Book, BroadwayWorld Off-Off-Broadway Awards; Nominee: Best Play or Musical and Best Score, New York Theatre Festival). She has also played for productions of Spring Awakening, Next Thing You Know, Eastbound The Musical, and alongside her work as music director for productions of Urinetown and A Little Night Music.
Violet is a proud member of the Maestra Music mentorship program, helping to guide and support young professional women and nonbinary artists who are interested in pursuing a professional career in making music for the theatre.
